Eight Weeks of Building, Refining, and Preparing for the Defense Market

Over the first eight weeks of the Montgomery TechLab Defense Accelerator, Cohort 3 companies have moved through an intensive program designed to strengthen their understanding of the defense ecosystem, refine their technologies and messaging, and prepare them for meaningful engagement with government, industry, and investment stakeholders.

The program began by building a strong foundation in the defense market. Companies were introduced to Air Force and Department of Defense priorities, SBIR/STTR pathways, stakeholder engagement, customer discovery, and the importance of clearly defining the problem their technology solves for the warfighter. Early sessions challenged each company to sharpen its problem statement, develop its OV-1, and begin connecting its commercial technology to a specific defense use case.

As the accelerator progressed, the cohort gained deeper exposure to the communities that influence how technology moves through the defense ecosystem, including Science & Technology, Acquisition, and End Users. Companies heard directly from defense professionals, small business leaders, government relations experts, and acquisition stakeholders while learning how requirements are identified, technologies are evaluated, funding moves through government, and relationships are built over time.

Technical and strategic development remained a major focus throughout the program. Through working sessions on AI, companies explored data-informed decision-making, artificial intelligence, datasets, and machine learning. A visit to BESPIN provided a firsthand look at Air Force software acquisition and how digital capabilities move from development into operational environments. Additional technical programming introduced companies to tools and resources available through MathWorks and other partners.

Each company also participated in ongoing one-on-one sessions focused on its individual defense strategy. These conversations helped companies refine their technical roadmaps, OV-1s, pitch decks, customer targets, messaging, and overall approach to the defense market. The development and delivery of the Level II Insights Playbooks gave each company a more customized roadmap for identifying potential opportunities, stakeholders, acquisition pathways, and next steps beyond the accelerator.

Funding and growth strategy have also been woven throughout the program. The cohort explored defense investment, government funding pathways, SSBCI funding strategies, Alabama Launchpad, and resources available to help innovative companies access capital and continue scaling. Government Relations programming provided another layer of insight into appropriations, policy, advocacy, and how small companies can position their capabilities for long-term consideration and support.

As Demo Day approaches, the focus has increasingly shifted toward execution. Companies have participated in extensive pitch practice and refinement, working to clearly communicate the problem they are solving, the value of their technology, its defense relevance, and the opportunity ahead. Website Review & Digital Marketing sessions also challenged the cohort to evaluate how their digital presence supports that message, builds credibility, and converts interest into meaningful conversations, demonstrations, and follow-up opportunities.

The cohort has also continued building connections across the broader Alabama innovation ecosystem through engagement with organizations including Innovate Alabama, Alabama Launchpad, the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce, PEO BES, and other regional and defense partners.

By the end of Week 8, the companies have progressed from understanding the fundamentals of the defense market to actively refining how they will engage it. With stronger messaging, deeper market insight, customized strategies, new relationships, and continued pitch development, Cohort 3 is entering the final stretch of the accelerator prepared to put those lessons into action at Demo Day, DAFITC, and beyond.
